Gene Edward Chaney was born November 10, 1958, in Boulder City, Nevada to Leon Walter and Bunny Chaney. At the age of 11, Gene was hit by a car that had run a red light and Gene was tossed 50 feet into the air. He landed on the edge of the pavement where the back of his head hit the pavement; therefore, sustaining a traumatic closed head brain injury (TBI). He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tue to the TBI, he regressed to that of a 3-year-old. His parents were advised to place him in an institution due to the severity of the injury. His parents determined that was not an option. Gene was not expected to improve to anywhere close to normal. However, he worked very hard in his recovery effort and returned to somewhat normalcy eventually enlisting in the Marine Corp. He was so excited and proud to be a Marine.
He was honorably discharged after serving his country. While in the marines, he met a young lady and married her. Gene and his wife Camilla were married a very short time. Camilla had become an expectant mother shortly after their marriage, however, Camila miscarried. The marriage failed after the miscarriage and the couple was divorced. For thirty years, Gene disappeared from his family but was able to be reunited with those he loved. He felt so lucky to be able to be reunited with his family. He also felt so blessed to find a new family in his Pickens Chapel Church family.
