Gary Owen Weed, age 85, of North Little Rock Arkansas, passed away peacefully in West Palm Beach, Florida on Monday, November 21, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Gary was born on November 15, 1937, in North Little Rock Arkansas to the late Glen and Evelyn Weed. Gary attended North Little Rock Senior High School and graduated in 1955. He excelled in sports and later attended Henderson State University, where he majored in education and met the love of his life, Patsy Spakes. Gary played football and baseball at Henderson State from 1957 to 1960. A tight end for the Reddies, Weed was a First-Team All-AIC selection in 1958 and 1959 in football. He was the team captain in 1959, helping lead the Reddies to the AIC championship. A two-year letterman on the Reddie baseball team, Weed was captain of the 1958 team that won the AIC title. Weed was Student Body President in 1959, was named Mr. Henderson and was a member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. After graduation, Weed went on to teach and coach for over 30 years, spending the first five years in Arkansas, then moving to West Palm Beach, Florida with his family.
Gary leaves behind two daughters, Leslie Knowles and Lisa Cope and son in laws, James Knowles and Kenneth Cope. A brother in law, Jerry Spakes (Ellen), his grandchildren, Ashlei Quail (Ricky), Lauren Dively (Joseph) and Benjamin Cope, great grandchildren, Kim, Samantha, Brawner, Rylei, Eden and Austin and many other nephews, nieces, and numerous friends, colleagues, students and athletes, who have become family along the way.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2022 from 1-2 pm at the Buie Funeral Home in Rison.
