Emily Jean (Glover) Taylor

February 24, 1922 — February 4, 2024

Rison

Emily Jean Glover Taylor, a resident of Rison, Cleveland County, Arkansas, passed away on

Sunday, February 4, 2024. She had been a resident of The Greenhouse Cottages at Southern

Hills, Rison. Emily was born on February 24, 1922, at home in Pine Bluff to the late Leland and

Ruth (Norton) Glover.

Emily was a student at Pine Bluff High School, graduating in 1940. She began work shortly

thereafter at Newberry Department Store, and later at Southwestern Bell Telephone where she

was a switchboard operator. She then worked at Davis Hospital as both a switchboard operator

and in the records department. Eventually, Emily joined the office of Dr. A. G. Sullenberger in

Pine Bluff, where she worked for many years as an office administrator.

In 1941, Emily married Carlton Taylor, and they made their home in Pine Bluff. They remained

married for 46 years until Carlton’s passing in 1986.

Emily retired in 1986 and relocated her home to Rison in 1999. In her retirement, Emily was an

active volunteer. She gave of her time to Neighbor to Neighbor, Volunteers in Public Schools,

and to her church, Hawley Memorial United Memorial Methodist Church, where she served as

President of the United Methodist Women and Church Financial Secretary. Emily later

transferred to the Rison United Methodist Church. She was a godly woman and a lifelong

member of the United Methodist Church.

Emily was a loyal and steadfast mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded

in death by her husband, Carlton Taylor, and a son, David Taylor. She is survived by three

children, Phyllis Reed (and husband Cleve), of Rison, Stephen Taylor, Sr. (and wife Sarah), of

Ward, and Tammy Goodman (and husband Jay), of Pine Bluff; a daughter-in-law, Debra Moon

Taylor, of Pine Bluff; six grand-children, Rodney Reed (and wife Kim), and Ryan Reed (and

wife Diana), both of Rison; Leah Dawson (and husband Bruce), of Little Rock; Stephen Taylor,

Jr. (and wife Heather) of Sheridan; Shelly Monge (and husband Daniel), of Ward; and Brandon

Goodman (and wife Heather), of Houston, TX; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Emily will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. She was a source of strength in

times of weakness, a provider of stability in times of uncertainty, and a source of love in times of

despair. Her life was the embodiment of Christ’s teachings on love and compassion, and

exemplified the admonition, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these…, you did for me.”

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 9, 2024, at Buie Funeral Home in Rison with visitation one hour prior to the service. Emily will be laid to rest at Wesley Chapel, Woodlawn.

Donations can be made to Wesley’s Chapel or the Rison United Methodist Church.
