It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dolly Ruth (Cook) Harmon, 89, on February 06, 2024.
Dolly was born on December 04, 1934 in Hobart, Oklahoma to John and Alice Cook. She was a resident in Kingsland, Arkansas. She was a Christian who loved our Lord and taught her children to do the same.
She (and Dewey) had 7 children. (Sonya, Rhonda, Glenna, Tracy, Kimberly, Chip and David.)
Dolly was a great cook and loved baking and all of her friends and relatives loved to come and eat at her house. She owned her own bakery shop in El Dorado and sold her cakes and pies to friends and companies for birthday parties and other events. She worked at the Levi’s factory and a nursing home in Star City before moving to El Dorado. She worked at various retail stores in and around El Dorado. Her favorite job was the one she had working in the lunch room in an El Dorado school. She was an avid reader and read thousands of books in her life. There was hardly a time when she didn’t have a book in her hands. Between cooking and cleaning for her big family, she was reading. She was also a great seamstress and sewed clothes for her children for school and special occasions. She was funny and had a great sense of humor. She made a lot of friends that she kept in touch with for many, many years.
Dolly was diagnosed with dementia in 2020 and went to live in St. John’s Place of Arkansas in Fordyce after she had hip surgery. She was one of their happiest and funniest residents. She would move around in her wheelchair and visit with all of the nurses and other residents with a big smile on her face. She teased people and told the staff that she had 25 children. We assume that 7 children probably felt like having 25.
Dolly is survived by Sonya Ashe (Curtis) of Crossville, TN, Glenna Riddell (Mark) of Spring, TX, Chip Harmon of El Dorado, AR and Kim West of Kingsland, AR, 18 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dewey Harmon, 2 daughters, Rhonda Martindill and Tracy Beal, her son, David Harmon, her parents, John and Alice, 3 sisters, Erma, Eunice, Wanda and 6 brothers, Gene, Charlie, Leon, Monroe, Albert and Don.
There’s now an empty place in our hearts but we know she is now with our Lord and Savior and celebrating with all of those who went before her.
A memorial service will be held on February 24, 2024 at Buie Funeral Home Chapel, 302 Main St., Rison, Arkansas at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Arkansas Hospice Foundation, 14 Parkstone Circle, North Little Rock, AR 72116.
